Pre-menstrual Syndrome and Chinese Herbs (Part I )

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss what exhibits stress to cause PMS.

Chinese medicine has been used over 4000 thousand years in treating women productive system disorder with proven success. Chinese herbalist believe Pre menstrual syndrome is caused by
1. Blood stagnation
Blood stagnation in the adnomial region including uterus causes menstrual pain and cramps before the period. By releasing the blood stagnation, it helps to remove the blood in the abdomen resulting in lessening the symptoms of PMS.


2. Liver qi stagnation
Liver qi is important in carbohydrate synthesis and fat and protein metabolism. Deficiency of yang in the kidney leading to over production of bad estrogen and kidney abnormal function in regulating urinary secretion resulting in back pain, water retention, tiredness and fatigue.
b) Deficiency of yin
Yin qi deficiency normally happens to women in peri menopause. It may happens to women with PMS with symptoms of night sweats and other symptoms of menopause as resulting of low levels of estrogen being produced before period.

4. Spleen qi stagnation
Sleen is an organ whose
functions is in the destruction of redundant red blood cells and production of blood. Spleen qi stagnation causes abnormal function in regulating the red blood cells in blood stream leading to blood stagnation just before period resulting in PMS. Symptoms of sleen qi stagnation include weight gain or lost, eating disorder or lost of appetite.
